Comcast Just Trolled Us All on Net Neutrality

TIME

Oh, Comcast.

The country’s largest Internet provider wants you to know that it “agrees with the President’s principles on net neutrality,” as a headline on a Tuesday afternoon blog post from EVP David Cohen reads. Net neutrality is the idea that all Internet content should be treated equally in terms of speed, a concept that’s in jeopardy because of a Supreme Court decision at the beginning of this year that struck down the Federal Communications Commission’s 2010 Open Internet rules enforcing it.

It’s an attention-grabbing headline from Comcast, a company that net neutrality advocates are making out to be among the most nefarious of the bad guys in the ongoing open Internet debate. Right off the bat, it looks like Comcast is agreeing with President Obama, who on Monday unexpectedly came out in favor of reclassifying broadband Internet as a utility. That’s a move big telecoms like Comcast should hate…

City Council Jokes it Will Castrate Mayor if Debt Not Resolved

TIME

Talk about raising the stakes: if Carmel, Indiana can’t solve its debt problem, the mayor may have to say goodbye to his family jewels.

It’s a joke, but seems to have made its way into the packet distributed to City Council on Tuesday. In a flowchart outlining a contingency plan for dealing with the debt, someone listed “shoot council, castrate mayor, put head between legs, kiss ass goodbye,” as a last resort, USA Todayreported.

Another option, according to the chart: increase property taxes “in amount necessary to cover obligation. Kiss political position goodbye.”

City Council President Eric Seidensticker said he made the flowchart months ago as a joke, and shared it with a consultant working with the Clerk Treasurer’s offices. “What you have there is a humorous version that was not meant for distribution,” he told IndyStar. “It was meant to be humorous. So they grabbed…

Listen to Kanye West’s Remix of Lorde’s Hunger Games Song

TIME

Last week, Lorde released the music video for “Yellow Flicker Beat,” which will appear on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1. This week, we get a new look at the track — and this time, it’s a remix from Kanye West. The difference is pretty subtle, but Kanye’s version is a bit more haunting and sinister than the original.

As the eerie notes play, you can definitely imagine Katniss marching bravely into some smokey, dimly-lit wooded area. Or something else Hunger Games-y. You get it.

What’s Good for You Is Good for Our Planet

TIME

Earlier this year, NASA issued a report declaring that global warming isn’t coming, it’s already here.

“This Is What a Holy Sh*t Moment for Global Warming Looks Like,” according to a headline on Mother Jones.

Two studies in the journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters reported that major glaciers that are part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appear to have become irrevocably destabilized. The collapse of these major glaciers now “appears unstoppable,” according to NASA.

An article in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association states, “Health is inextricably linked to climate change,” including respiratory disorders, infectious diseases, water-borne diseases and mental health disorders.

Warmer oceans mean that sea levels will rise more than 3 feet in 200 years, or less, eventually triggering the collapse of the rest of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. When the ice sheet is gone, sea levels will rise…

All things work together

2014-10-08 14.30.19edited The note I placed on the kitchen table with a container filled with caramel brownies, my claim to fame. My attempt at bribery failed, but it did soften some hearts (mostly those with a sweet tooth) toward me. Someone adhered the happy raccoon to my note, and, I must say, this pleased me, too.

It felt as if I were in Mrs. Repulski’s Advanced Humanities class again.

“I’d better explain this better,” my English teacher abruptly would interrupt her own lecture, adding: “Sara looks confused.”

It’s rather embarrassing at times, but my face is nothing but honest.  If I were confused, it showed. Mrs. Repulski would then take the time to explain the material again, perhaps a different way, reading my face to measure the entire class’s level of understanding. That was high school.

But at this particular moment, I was in a step aerobics class, far in place and time from Mrs. Repulski…
